Our studies on prosperity start with a basic question. What is really meant by the terms abundance and prosperity? Our wealthy place in God is unquestionable, but does require understanding.
3 John 2 says Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
God’s will as expressed by John is for abundance or prosperity embraces every area of life. God wants us to prosper in body, soul and spirit. That is, physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. To live in physical abundance also includes material possessions and properties and finances.
Most people immediately think of money, but it is obviously more than money. Your wealthy place in God embraces all of these things, but when it relates to finances, God wants us to get the balance right. He wants us to link up or associate with the right sorts of people. Paul expressed this in 1 Timothy 6:10. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Money itself is not evil. It is the pursuit of it or the way we go about getting it that matters. Wrong associations with money or people can bring you down, but when we associate with the right things, by seeking God and His kingdom above all else, which means seek God’s ways of doing things, He brings the right things into our lives. Jesus said that they would be added to us. See Matthew 6:33. The bible tells us that  prosperity can chase after us and overtake us, so God has abundance in mind for us and for a nation. He promised abundance or prosperity to Abraham and this promise was a promise for a nation according to Genesis 15:5.
God told Abraham to come outside and look for himself. He told Abraham to look to the North, to the South, to the East and to the West (see Genesis 13:14), which meant that God had no boundaries and that Abraham had to look for himself.
This also means that abundance and prosperity do not come automatically. This state comes by seed sowing and more seed sowing. Without seed, there will be no harvest, but the sowing of seed and the harvesting of crops is perpetual. It has to be a repetitive and deliberate function.
A farmer does not eat his seed, but sows it. Naturally he may retain portion for his own consumption, but seed is for sowing. Every seed has the ability to reproduce. It has to be sown, die to itself, bear fruit and be sown again. That is God’s way of multiplication. It includes money, relationships, friendships and more.
To prosper biblically and enter into our wealthy place in God, we need clarity of mind and purpose.
Money without a mission is a waste and it can in fact destroy its possessor if not controlled and used wisely. We need to plan for sowing. We need to determine what to sow, where to sow, how to sow and when to sow. It is foolish to sow wheat seed in a rice paddy. It is foolish to expect to reap grapes when an apple is planted. Then there is the question of harvest time. It is useless to sow seed unless we are prepared to reap the crop, store it if necessary in the right manner and transport it to market. All of these things take time, require planning, and use different tools.
A most important thing to never forget is to remember where it all and who gave it to us. And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish His covenant… Deuteronomy 8:18.
