This page speaks about the Priesthood of the Believer:
Peter tells us that we are all priests, saying-
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10.
Priesthood in the Old Testament was a serious matter… a holy calling. No one could choose the priesthood as a vocation and study for it as we often see today. In fact, the priesthood in this light is finished, having been fulfilled in and by Jesus who is our Great High Priest (See Hebrews 2:17, 3:1, 4:14-15, 5:1-10, 6:20), but we all have been made to be priests to God under the provisions of the New Testament. The Old Testament Priest had to possess certain characteristics. He had to have the right family tree, come from the right family, of the right tribe and had to meet God’s stringent standards.
In a certain sense, those standards still apply today and we shall look at what it takes to be a Royal Priesthood, but we do so in a different way. Instead of looking at what qualifies the person for priesthood, we will look at what DisQualified him from ministry. We share this, because Christians all around the world are getting the same message… God is preparing us for something, but what is that “something”? Christians from all around the world are saying that we are entering into a new dispensation… that we are sailing in uncharted waters… that something new is upon us...

One Standard

God has only one standard. That standard is perfection (or maturity) and that standard is Jesus.
When Jesus ascended on high after being raised from the dead, he gave us gifts. The bible says And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. Ephesians 4:11.

These are what we call the ascension gift ministries and they were given to the church… not to churches or denominations… but to The Church for specific purposes.
His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church). Ephesians 4:12.
His intention was [That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the [full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ’s own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him. Ephesians 4:13.

He is the standard. Everything we do here is to reflect that. All that I do as a minister of the gospel is to reflect his plan and purpose. If I do not, then I have failed. My task, as is the task of all who are the called ones, is to equip the saints, so that the saints can do the work of the ministry. You might not be in full time or even part time ministry as such, but you are in the ministry of reconciliation. You are are a priest of the most high God and the priesthood today is to offer spiritual sacrifices unto God.

Those in a leadership role are to do whatever we can to bring God’s people up to the measure of the fullness of Christ… to his standard! We may shoot ourselves in the foot on occasions (some more often than others), but we are becoming what we already are. God knows that. He accepts us as we are… now… but he also knows what we will become and he knows that we are exposed to a lost and dying world.

The Old Testament Priest performed his duties… as commanded by God. The beast was slain and blood shed, but in the performance of his priestly duties, the priest himself became contaminated. He became unclean by virtue of his priestly duties and God provided for that.

It is a real world out there and we can become contaminated by those we minister to, but we have the victory and we have the answer. Our lives are hid with God in Christ and we can set ourselves apart for this purpose. Colossians 3:1-4

What do we do to ensure that we qualify for priesthood? You know best of all where you stand before God and it is not my place here to tell you what you must or must not do. You must work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12.
You can seek him for yourselves, but here are a few pointers to help. Be consistent in private. It is one thing to put on a holy church face on Sundays, but live like the devil himself Monday to Saturday. Keep on keeping on. Paul said that having done all... stand. Well, stand therefore. You may ask, “How long”? As long as it takes. Battle the defects. Submit yourself to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Look to Jesus the author and finisher of your faith. Examine ourselves regularly and see how we measure up to the standard of Jesus, but in so doing, do not focus too much on them and become navel gazers. Consecrate yourself from (where you are now) to (where you will be). In short, it means that we are to become what we already are… Priests and Kings to our God.

Be blessed,
Robert
